What to Expect After Surgery
Your recovery is just as important as your procedure. This page provides important guidance on what to expect after surgery and how to care for yourself during the healing process.
Surgery Expectations
- Anesthesia services are provided by highly qualified professionals.
- Your anesthesia provider will visit you at your bedside to complete a pre-anesthesia assessment and answer any questions, if anesthesia is required.
- Make sure to discuss with your anesthesiologist any medications you are currently taking, even over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
- You and your surgeon will determine the appropriate type of anesthesia together.
After Surgery
Recovery
- Our professionally trained staff will take you to the recovery area immediately after surgery and closely monitor you.
- The amount of time you spend in recovery depends upon the type of surgery and anesthesia you received.
- Patients may not leave the center alone or drive themselves home. An adult must accompany you and take responsibility for your care. We do not permit transportation by public transit, taxis, or rideshare services (such as Uber, Lyft, or similar apps).
- If you received general anesthesia or sedation, it is important that you not drive or drink alcohol for 24 hours following surgery.
Family
- Have one adult family member or friend accompany you to the facility.
- We do not permit transportation by public transit, taxis, or rideshare services (such as Uber, Lyft, or similar apps).

- After surgery and at the time of discharge you may feel sleepy, tired, and dizzy.
- It is natural to experience some discomfort or minor pain in the area of your surgery at the time of discharge.
Home Needs
- Please arrange for a responsible adult to remain with you for 24-hours after surgery.
- A nurse will contact you within 24-72 hours after discharge to evaluate your progress and answer any questions you may have.
